When some of us first heard aboot the idea of a non-party-political referendum on Scottish independence, we liked the sound of this; thinking, because of not being party-political, it could get a FAR higher turnout than any petty election of politicians ever could get. Working class folk scunnered with politicians, folk who didn’t usually vote, would turn out. And because of being non-party-political, folk who supported different parties could vote Yes without helping any ambitious politician they couldn’t stand! Plus, we thought mass involvement could make this more revolutionary than any mere election of politicians possibly ever could be.
We were right – in principle….
There was a sort-of referendum in 2014. However, that settled nothing. It seems a narrow majority of folk born in, & still living in, Scotland, may have voted Yes; but the UK ruling class told folk that indy Scotland would be out of the EU, while the UK would definitely REMAIN. A lie, but still, that lie swung things to a small majority for No.
Just 2 years later, there was a UK-wide referendum on Leaving the EU. The rules were RIGGED for that. These changed rules resulted in a narrow win for LEAVE, but with every part of Scotland voting Remain. If the 2014 vote had been on 2016 rules, Scotland voted narrowly for independence; if the 2016 vote had been under 2014 rules, the UK voted to remain in the EU. No matter how you feel about the EU (and some of us are not fans!) that obviously meant there would have to be a new Independence vote.
But then in 2022 a so-called “Supreme” court, an anti-democratic sub-committee of the corrupt UK ruling class, said “You can’t have a new referendum”. That verdict from a cabal which had been concocted by that dodgy lawyer, Tony Blair, was greeted with great relief by Westminster politicians, who have, ever since, seen the only suitable date for a new vote as being The Twelfth Of Never. We’re now living under corrupt UK ruling class dictatorship.
The Westminster regime changed from Tweedledee to Tweedledum without any real “change”. Some clown wearing a hat costing a sqillion quid sat on a Golden Throne and farted out “MY GOVERNMENT WILL …” do things which don’t include tackling Child Poverty, and which offer sweet burgerall to Scotland. There have already been a lot of protests against this allegedly “changed” regime. You don’t need to be a prophet to predict hostility to this regime will continue to grow.
As for us, we protest against corrupt ruling class dictatorship as a whole. Not just against this particular gang of crooks, not just against that contemptible sub-committee braying democratic self-determination would be “illegal”, but against the entire, parasitic, degenerate, anti-democratic, system of class rule in this so-called “United” KINGDOM.
The Radical Independence protest in Edinburgh, Saturday 23rd November, will be just one small part of a continuing, and developing, campaign against corrupt UK ruling class dictatorship.
