In recent years, the landscape of international sports has become increasingly intertwined with global politics. One of the more recent developments is the establishment of the FIFA Peace Award, a recognition aimed at promoting peace through football. However, speculation surrounds whether it is simply a toy to appease the giant Man Baby that currently presides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
The FIFA Peace Award: What Is It?
According to FIFA. The FIFA Peace Award was introduced as part of FIFA’s commitment to use football as a platform for positive social change. The award recognizes individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to peace and conflict resolution through the sport. FIFA say this reflects their broader mission to promote not just the game but also social values.
While there is no direct evidence to suggest that FIFA created the Peace Award specifically to appease Trump, several factors raise intriguing questions about political motivations.
Fifa president Gianni Infantino, who describes Trump as “a close friend” will present the inaugural award will be presented on 5 December during the World Cup draw at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC, a high-profile event that Trump is expected to attend.
Trump has made no secret that he thinks he deserves to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and his allies were furious when he was “snubbed” for this year’s award. Has Infantino created a FIFA Version as a consolation?
Ahead of next years World Cup due to be hosted jointly by USA, Canada and Mexico, but with the majority of matches played in the USA, some might say it is prudent for FIFA to keep Trump onside rather than risk him ruining their showcase event by throwing a tantrum over a perceived slight.
So is the FIFA Peace Award a genuine attempt to promote peace and global reconciliation or a cynical attempt to pander to the ego of a would be dictator? We will find out on the 5th December.
